        Behind the name
Penelope Lively’s writing covers many genres from prize-winning novels, short stories for both adults and children, as well as a beautifully crafted memoir ‘Life in the Garden’. Penelope describes, “The two central activities in my life – alongside writing – have been reading and gardening,” and this book elegantly combines the two. Gardening is in Penelope’s genes. Her grandmother created a wonderful garden, very Gertrude Jekyll-inspired, whilst her mother built an English garden in Egypt furnished with lawns, lily ponds and a rose garden, providing the backdrop for many of her childhood memories.
