Wind-Swept Charm: English Roses for Exposed Locations
Gardens high on hills, offer breathtaking views, but the combination of wind, cold winters, and shorter growing seasons can make growing roses a challenge. With careful selection and planting, even these exposed gardens can thrive with elegant, fragrant blooms.
Choosing the Right English Roses
In windy conditions, roses with smaller, simple or semi-double flowers are less affected by the elements. Their lighter blooms are less likely to be battered, and their natural movement in the breeze adds a gentle, romantic charm to the garden. Varieties such as Tottering-by-Gently and Kew Gardens are excellent examples. Others like Eustacia Vye (syn. Sts. Francis and Claire) and Susan Williams-Ellis™ are hardy and long-flowering, ideal for exposed sites.
It is important to plant the bud union at least 5cm below the soil. This extra depth helps anchor the rose firmly, minimising wind rock and giving it the best chance to establish in an exposed location.
Caring for English Roses in Windy Conditions
Even hardy roses benefit from thoughtful care in exposed gardens. Young plants may need a low stake or discreet frame to help them settle until their roots are strong enough to support themselves.
Planting roses alongside hardy shrubs or perennials such as lavender, foxgloves, or ornamental grasses can provide shelter, create a gentle microclimate, and reduce stress on the plants.
